Can you cook a frozen turkey?

Quick answer

Yes. It's safe to roast a turkey straight from frozen at 325°F. It takes at least 50% longer than a thawed turkey, so a 14 lb frozen turkey needs roughly 5–6 hours. Don't stuff it.

How to roast a frozen turkey

  1. Heat the oven to 325°F. Put the frozen turkey on a rack in a roasting pan.
  2. After about 2 hours, when it's soft enough, carefully remove the neck and giblet bag with tongs.
  3. Season it now that the skin has thawed.
  4. Keep roasting until the breast, thigh and wing all read 165°F.
  5. Rest 20 minutes, then carve.

Don't do this

  • Don't stuff a frozen turkey. The stuffing won't heat safely in time.
  • Don't use a slow cooker for a whole frozen turkey.
