How to work out a discount
- Turn the percent into a decimal: 30% = 0.30.
- Multiply by the price: $80 ร 0.30 = $24 off.
- Subtract: $80 โ $24 = $56.
Quick trick: to find the sale price in one step, multiply by what's left. 30% off means you pay 70%, so $80 ร 0.70 = $56.
Stacked discounts aren't added together
"Extra 10% off sale items" is taken off the sale price, not the original. So 20% + 10% off is really 28% off. This calculator does that math for you.
Black Friday tips
- Compare the final price, not the % off. A big percent off a high "original" price can still cost more than another store.
- Check shipping costs and return rules before you buy.
- Compare the same item across stores on ShopPortal's Black Friday page.
FAQ
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by the discount percent, then subtract it. For 30% off $80: 80 ร 0.30 = $24 off, so you pay $56.
Do two discounts add up? Is 20% + 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. The second discount comes off the already-reduced price. 20% off and then 10% off equals 28% off in total, not 30%.
Is sales tax added before or after the discount?
In most US stores, sales tax is charged on the discounted price, after the coupon or sale is taken off.
