BMI = weight (kg) รท height (m)ยฒ. In pounds and inches: BMI = 703 ร weight (lb) รท height (in)ยฒ.
What BMI can and can't tell you
BMI is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis. It doesn't tell muscle from fat, so very muscular people can have a high BMI while being healthy. It also doesn't show where fat is stored, and it can differ by age and ethnicity. A doctor can look at the whole picture.
This calculator is for adults 20 and older. Children's and teens' BMI is read using age- and sex-specific growth charts, so please ask your child's doctor.
This is an estimate, not medical advice. It's meant for healthy adults and isn't designed for pregnancy, breastfeeding, athletes in heavy training, or anyone with a medical condition. For personal advice, talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian.
FAQ
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy weight range.
Is BMI accurate for muscular people?
Not always. BMI can't tell muscle from fat, so athletes and very muscular people may have a high BMI without extra body fat.
Can I use this BMI calculator for my child?
No. Kids' and teens' BMI must be compared to growth charts for their age and sex. Your child's doctor can help.
